Syllabus

Hey everybody. I hope this site will help you during the course. Every now and then I will post things. I'll usually tell you in class if I've added something. Today I will post the syllabus just in case you couldn't take all the necessary notes during class. I hope you all have a great learning experience. Cheers.

You MUST buy the book by week 2 or you will lose participation points.
*It is illegal to photocopy books and forbidden by the university. Just buy one. It’s only 12,000 won.

Midterm Exam- Week 8, (Oct 15-19), during the first class of the week.
The test will cover chapters 1-4. It is worth 20% of your mark.

Topic- People and/or ideas that have helped the world.
10% will be peer evaluation and 10% will be teacher evaluation.

This will be questions on one of the Social Language sections, (part 2), in the book. It will be something you have already heard. Worth 10% of your mark.

Final Exam- Week 16 (Monday, Dec. 10). Time and place will be announced. All of my students, (6 classes), will meet in the same room and write the same exam. The exam will cover chapters 5-8 of the book. It is worth 30% of your mark.

Participation- This includes attendance, doing assignments in class and at home, coming to class on time, bringing your book and other necessary supplies, speaking English every day, diligently trying to improve your English. This will include any + or – you receive during the course as well as my overall impression of your effort in class. Try to make a good impression. Participation is worth 20% or your mark.

I have extensive education in student evaluation. I have been teaching and grading ESL students for 11 years. Please trust my evaluations.

Kisses for my students

Hi everybody.

I just thought I would post the results of the Kiss experiment we did last week. I was very happy to see the sharing, unselfishness and social cooperation most volunteers showed. Wouldn't it be nice if the world were controlled by people with these same attributes? Unfortunately, 10% of the people of the world have 85% of the wealth. If you put that into our classroom Kiss model it means the richest 10% of the world are the kind of people who would take 34 of the 40 Kisses in the jar. NOBODY did that! So I guess that means none of you are the kind of people who will be C.E.O. of a large corporation, land barons, fashion moguls or things like that. GOOD FOR YOU!

Class one had 11 Kisses left at the end. The 2nd time around they had 18 left.

Class two had the student who got the most Kisses. But he was nice enough to be the first volunteer so maybe he deserved them. He took 25, not 34. And he shared them afterwards like Ted Turner giving a billion dollars to the UN. 1-25, 2-6, 3-5, 4-3, 5-3, 6-2, 7-2, 8-1, 9-0, 10-1.

Class three 1-3, 2-4, 3-6, 4-2, 5-4, 6-1, 7-3, 8-3, 9-6, 10-10.

Class four 1-2, 2-2, 3-3, 4-2, 5-4, 6-13, 7-5, 8-3, 9-2, 10-1.

Class five I was running out of Kisses so I only used 20 in the jar. 1-1, 2-3, 3-1, 4-7, 5-1, 6-2, 7-2, 8-0, 9-2, 10-3. Sorry class five.

Class six 1-2, 2-1, 3-7, 4-4, 5-2, 6-3, 7-3, 8-3, 9-2, 10-13.

If you can, try to read the story about the poster artist Michael Cassidy on page 65 in the text. This is a good example of how you can talk about the art you choose for your presentations the week after next.

Have a good weekend!
